For example, she was the brunt of many jokes. There was that year in 1975 when we were stuck at Stuckey's in a blizzard on the way back from Duluth. The next morning we were one of the first cars to venture out on the interstate. The roads were cleared off from the blowing snow but under many of the bridges were huge finger drifts. Right before coming upon one of them, Melba hollers out, "Edward, look at those cows!"

Dad looks over to see the cows just as he goes under an overpass. The drift was so big we literally buried the car and filled the entire engine compartment with snow. For years afterward, when we wanted to get a jab in, we'd say, "Edward, look at the cows!"

  1. We were in Florida in 1971 to see Disney World but Roger, Dwight and I were also going to do some snorkeling. We pull into a state park that had the best snorkeling in Florida and at the gate the Ranger says, "Sorry, no pets allowed."

Roger and Dwight and I looked at each other, then at Puff and one of us said, "Kill the dog."

  2. And how many times did we say, "Rare bird alert!" whenever her phone rang and it was one of her birding friends?

  3. When the holidays came around did we ever run out of food? We never even ran out of a single food item. And was there ever a single thing we didn't like, other than Brussel Sprouts?
